This story was told in the true form of fables and fairy tales. It's not the watered down version that panders to our delicate sensibilities, and so yes, it's dark (WAAAAAHHH, Mr. Cwanky was a wittle depwessed after the movie. Here, here. Let Mommy tuck you in and bwing you a cup of warm milk.)
How about that the script was nearly perfectly crafted? How about the performances...not a bad one in the bunch. The casting? Also near perfect.
But yes, if you are expecting a tra-la-la fantasy tale where everyone lives "happiwwy ever after", stick to the trite, formulaic Hollywood hoo-ha. There's no shortage of it.
