It's all very simple, really. The monarch's firstborn male child becomes the next monarch. If there are no males, then the firstborn female becomes monarch.
The Queen Mother wasn't Queen Regnant in her own right. She becamse Queen by default, after her brother-in-law (Edward VIII) abdicated the throne in 1937, leaving his younger brother (George VI)as heir to the throne. When George died, his firstborn ( who happened to be a female, with no brothers) became Queen, leaving her mother with the title of Queen Mother.
There, that wasn't so very difficult, after all, was it?
