03/17/08: Art prostitution and art mercinaries.

Posted by: MasterK

Movies like Scary Movie and Meet the Spatans are not really art. It is art prostitution because it uses an artistic medium to give a bunch of people a crappy string of bad jokes and hope that people will pay for it. Excessively goody-two-shoes (please excuse my use of that expression) educational stuff, and movies that feature excessive product placement or agenda are movie mercinaries. I value education as much as anyone, but in art, the message should be conveyed by original means, not just by flat out stating it. Things with an educational purpose should convey it creatively, instead of just selling the message. The same thing with agenda. It's OK to have politics, but don't sell them with macho attitude (I'm looking at you Iron Man), make them apparent through character actions (like Romero zombie movies). Don't make the product, attitude or message compromise it artistically. Movies that just string together a bunch of movie charachters telling sex jokes, with no creativity involved [what sort of silly (please excuse the use of the word silly and the use of brackets) crap would Spider-Man do on a wall. Push-ups? Cheerleading? Disco? Hmm.. breakdancing...yeah.) Makes for an art form that is only about 30% real art.
