Thanks guys, and for the record, the conversation was only slightly embellished. Two people were actually fighting over whether SM or MTS were the funniest movies ever. And I believe the guy meant Martins Father of the Bride because he then mentioned some of Martin's funnier movies. And once more for the record, Cheaper by the Dozen was Martin's least funny movie, not Father of the Bride.
Here's a wake-up call on the direction we're going, folks:
Best Picture Nominees
1962: Lawrence of Arabia (winner), The Music Man, Mutiny
on the Bountry, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Longest Day.
1967: In the Heat of the Night (winner), The Graduate, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Bonnie & Clyde, Dr. Doolittle (NOT NOMINATED: Cool Hand Luke!)
1977: Annie Hall (winner), Star Wars, The Goodbye Girl, Julia, The Turning Point
1989: Driving Miss Daisy (winner), My Left Foot, Field of Dreams, The Dead Poet's Society, Born on the 4th of July
(noticing a trend?)
1996: The English Patient (winner), Fargo, Secrets and Lies, Shine, Jerry MacGuire
2000: Gladiator (winner), Traffic, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Erin Brockovich, Chocolat
2005: Crash (winner), Munich, Good Night and Good Luck, Capote, Brokeback Mountain
I picked these years at random, but I think they paint a pretty clear picture of the direction we're headed.
