02/10/02: Re: The Oscar Nominee Prediction Contest

Posted By: bigpink

First, Aron, please adjust my Crankyland Awards nominations. Insert Monster's Ball at number 2 and Halle BErry at number 1, tied with Naomi Watts (give them both 4.5 points or however you do it). I saw Monster's Ball today and, needless to say, I was floored. By the way, I have to think about where Billy Bob and the screenplay would figure in.

Note that I also recently saw Black Hawk Down and that doesn't affect ANY of my nominations. Well, you could put it down for best sound. Still, that tops my list for most disappointing of the year. It was VERY well done for a Public Service Announcement for the US Armed Forces. It was also incredibly behind the times in its portrayal of the "skinnies". That and, strangely, it was boring. Yes, I felt like I was in the war; in fact, it may have accomplished that feat better than any movie I've ever seen. But what did this film really have to SAY about war? Nothing too interesting. What impact did the characters have on me? Virtually none. I appreciate its good qualities, but overall this movie is the least deserving of those being mentioned for best picture. Even weaker than Moulin Rouge.

Now, my Oscar predictions:

Picture:
A Beautiful Mind
The Fellowship OF The Ring
In The Bedroom
Moulin Rouge -- undeserved
Gosford PArk
alternate: Monster's Ball

Director:
Ron Howard -- undeserved
Peter Jackson
Baz Luhrman -- undeserved
David Lynch
Robert Altman
alternate: sheesh, either Scott or Field, I'll say Scott has a better chance with the voters though.

Actor:
Russell Crowe
Denzel Washington
Gene Hackman
Tom Wilkinson
Billy Bob Thornton, likely for The MAn wHo Wasn;t There alternate: Will Smith -- undeserved

Actress:
Sissy Spacek -- should be supporting, though Halle Berry Renee Zellweger Naomi Watts Nicole Kidman, likely for Moulin Rouge -- undeserved alternate: Judi Dench

Supporting Actor:
Ben Kingsley
Ian McKellen
Jim Broadbent
Steve Buscemi
JOn Voight
alternate: Tony Shalhoub

Supporting Actress:
Jennifer Connelly
Helen Mirren
Maggie Smith
Marisa Tomei
Cameron Diaz
alternate: Diaz may be replaced by Kate Winslet.

Well, if I am correct about the above, then there is only one nom that would really piss me off. I liked Moulin Rouge, but want to puke at the thought of Luhrmann getting nominated, mainly because it reminds me of how nauseous I was made by his quick cuts and obnoxious sound effects.
