As the second post on this forum that actually has to do with the movie in question and the first that doesn't come from someone who does nothing but regurgitate the same views they were trying to villify, I am going to give my opinon of this film. It's great. It does give a highly accurate and very disturbing view of "Churchianity" vs. Christianity. Hillary Faye(Mandy Moore) and the rest of the "Christian Jewels" are spot on as the "in crowd" who use God instead of clothes from the Gap to keep others down. Unfortunatly, that representation is definitly an accurate portrayal of many of todays "Christians". Like them, Hillary is so preoccupied with the trappings of her faith that she completly misses Christianity's inherent teachings Poor Mary is not only dumped from the group, but becomes their special target when her misinterpretation of God's will leads her to question her faith. It's absolutly no wonder to me at all that people are running away in droves from anything labeled "Christian" when that is their typical example. We are allowed to question our faith, the Bible says so. Mary comes back to her love of Christ after discovering that those people she's gone her whole life prosecuting are by far the best examples of decency in her world. Providing counterpoint to her trasformation from hypocrite to Christian are two unlikely friends who see her through her pregnancy and it's consequences while her mother is crammed to far up Pastor Skip's posterior to see straight. It is both amusing and thought provoking that these two are Hillary's crippled brother, Roland,(who is a self proclaimed "non-Christian") that Mary has basically ignored and Cassandra, A Jewish "bad seed" whom she has activly tried to "save". There is also Patrick, Skip's son and Mary's love interest, who sees right through his father's "holier than thou" 'tude. Together, it's these three who teach Mary the true meaning of faith. Which is, that you can fail, question, and even sin. Jesus will always be there when you realize that you need him. All you have to do is believe, sincerely repent, and give your life back to him.
