Packers equipment manager picked for top honor in field

April 24, 2002

SportsLine.com wire reports

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers can add another member of the family to their illustrious list of award winners.

Gordon "Red" Batty was named the NFL's equipment manager of the year by a vote of his peers at the annual meeting of NFL equipment managers in San Diego. Packers general manager and head coach Mike Sherman presented Batty with the "Whitey Zimmerman Memorial Award."

"Red Batty is the very best at what he does," Sherman said. "He is a true professional and takes enormous pride in his work. If we are as successful doing our jobs as he is doing his, we would go to the Super Bowl every year."

The 43-year-old Batty is in his 31st year in the profession and ninth with Green Bay. He got his start as a 14-year-old ball boy for his hometown Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League and became their equipment manager six years later. At 22, he joined the Houston Oilers as the youngest equipment manager in NFL history.
