"Seabiscuit" is a "Pleasantville" reunion: writer-director Gary Ross and stars Tobey Maguire and William H. Macey are principal players in both movies, and, honestly, "Seabiscuit" looks somewhat like "Pleasantville" in design (right down to the fact that both films have black-and-white sequences and color sequences).
I haven't seen "Pleasantville" in the five years since it came out, but in the wake of the similar but tremendous "Truman Show," it just seemed rather average to me. It was a fairly good, rather original idea but the whole film appeared to be nothing more than a lesson, right down to the fact that Don Knotts showed up for apparently no other purpose than to teach the kids a lesson by magically initiating the entire plot. The magic angle also seemed unnecessary -- don't ask me why I was looking for sci-fi instead of fantasy, but apparently I was.
But before passing such harsh judgment, I should probably watch it again because it isn't like I remember it all that well and occasionally my opinions change with time.
