07/25/03: Good, but not great. <spoilers>

Great score. Great songs. Great cinematography. Great art direction. Great premise. Bad resolution in Act 3. You mean Reese was gonna stay behind because she liked to read? (sorry Becky) That's good, but how will Tobey explain that to their parents? And there could have been a better way of sending the characters into Pleasantville-- the Don Knotts subplot was weak, and I don't ever remember having a tug-of-war with my sister over the TV remote, certainly not one as goofy-looking as the one in the movie.

However, I didn't really mind the preaching too much, perhaps because the courtroom sequence was a great send-up of To Kill a Mockingbird. As far as "message movies" go, Pleasantville is leagues above, say, Bruce Almighty.
