07/28/03: they all sound pretty right on

i think i liked horses because as a girl, there is alot more control put upon you growing up. little girls are sheltered more than little boys and it really does get on you after awhile. i think i liked riding horses because finally i got to control something for a change. especially something that big and intelligent that could rear up and kill me at any moment. also careing for another species like that is a huge responsibility and a way to prove yourself. the only thing i really hated about them was putting the saddle on. i never got the hang of it. i also remember living down the street from sheryl mcfarland. she was an adopted girl my age that was brought up in a violent home and hence, she would beat her horse, duke. sometimes she would beat duke with me still on his back. i always felt really bad for the horse and would be nice to him and talk gently to him whenever i could. in return, duke would just sit and take it if i was on him and respond positively to me when i did talk to him. i don't think she really hurt him. we were both small. it was just humiliating for him, i think. when they decided to sell him, both my parents and i really wanted to buy him but we didn't have enough land or any quarters to shelter him. i get really choked up when i think back about the whole situation but i think he went to a really good family with lots of land and other horses. at least i hope he did. he was a great horse.
