04/03/98: What of it, Burke?

Posted By: Charles James Fox

After all, you're the one who led me out of the darkness, as it were, into a more enlightened notion of the political party's role in making this nation fit for civilised and liberty-loving men. The only thing standing in our way of Whig supremacy is Great Satan and his dozing first minister - well, and perhaps Shelburne as well, though I've no doubt I'm equal to the efforts of that Jesuitical schemer.

Yes, I meant WE'RE equal, to be sure. Really, Mr. Burke, you can find the smallest casual utterance a cause for concern. Help me carry his grace here to a chair, will you? And call for the servants - has everyone gone hiding?

Really should go out and have further words with that mob outside - general elections coming up soon, after all, and I'm thinking that Westminster might be a better test of my abilities. These may well be some of my future constituents.

Is that someone at one of the back windows? Georgiana! This is hardly the night for a fashionable rout, my dear - and is that Sheridan with you? Still celebrating your admission into Brooks's, Dick, I see.
