03/31/98: Leave our home?

Posted By: Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire

La, my dear! I have no intention of turning tail and fleeing to Chiswick House. Mobs do not frighten me. Besides, Charles says that they plan an orderly march to Parliament. Yes indeed he is now Charles to me - his attentions are a blessed comfort, my dear, when you are occupied with business. He explains the complicated political situation so nicely that it entertains as well as theatre.

And what if he HAS introduced me to gaming as well? Surely you do not begrudge me innocent diversions - as I do not gainsay your mistress.

Ah, forgive me. We have an arrangement, that I do know. Though is it my fault that we have not yet had a son? I know that you plan to make an address to the Lords tomorrow regarding the Catholic Relief Bill - then why is it necessary to leave me tonight? It is for her sake, is it not? Very well - to your drab. I daresay that I shall someday soon find adventure of my own. Until then, at least make certain that the servants are armed.

Perhaps if Charles is resolved to guard Richmond House, I may persuade that amusing Mr. Sheridan to come here. Indeed he is not an adventurer! I would support a seat for him in the Commons if 'twere within my power!
