(TRANSCRIBED: entry made by Abigail Adams)
Do you think it may have been from our French allies? All I know is that someone forwarded the appropriate sum to our Government with instructions that it should be used for my passage. Well, naturally when the Congressional courier rode to Braintree with the news, I insisted that the funds be distributed to our brave soldiers instead, but he said that Congress would not hear of it, that Ambassador Adams had performed such service and sacrifice as it would be even further remiss of his Government not to repay his family to at least this degree.
When they expressed it that way, of course, I hardly possessed a choice. My daughter and youngest son will stay with my sister Mary Cranch in my absence, and I was able to find a trustworthy tenant for our farm, so fortunately I have little to distract me from thoughts of how Mr. Adams will react when we land upon the French shore that you tell me is so close now.
What is it, Captain? A ship in the Channel flying no national colors? That is quite odd, is it not? Might it represent some dastardly trick of the wicked British government to get near our own ship before we can make safe harbour in France? Indeed I shall not go below - I have not crossed an ocean and braved wartime dangers to skulk in that dreadful hold now! Yes, Mr. Adams says the same thing regarding headstrong women.
