This director has a great ability: to make me stare at his work transfixed, yet at the same time desperately wanting to turn away. He has created some of the ugliest, most drab and useless characters I have ever seen. I honestly can't decide whether these are good or bad things! I have been wanting to see Secrets and Lies, but can't decide if I should go or not. Every time I see a Mike Leigh film I feel quite depressed by the nagging, overpowering 'kitchen sink' dreariness, but I still find myself fascinated. I would really like to hear from others what they enjoy about Mike Leigh, because I can't quite identify what it is I enjoy about his films!
