04/01/97: Re: Mike Leigh

I saw "Naked" for the first time this weekend, and as it's now monday morning, I have to record my reaction to it.

This is the greatest film I have ever seen. I'm familiar with Leigh's other works - Life is Sweet and obviously Abigail's Party, but none have left the same kind of impression on me as "Naked". This film shocked, scared, enlightened and revulsed. It made me think about my own existence - in fact, Johnny is the greatest existential hero of modern cinema. Thewlis' performance is mesmerising. His rants, wit, insights supercede virtually all other film diaolgue. The bit where he explains to Brian the Security Guard why the Apocalypse is upon us left me reeling. I'm not superstitious or impressionable, but my jaw hit the ground. I'd be interested in hearing other people's impressions of the film. Is is a searing critique of Post Thatcher Britain or a meditation/warning about the end of the world? Comments please ..
