Well, in my opinion, his early work is still the best. The last three films have lacked something. Leigh is becoming more well-known for these films because, well, the're the most conventional of his career. I don't mean to say I didn't think these works to be very good, in terms of what's out there, but when compared to Hard Labour, Grown-ups, etc., they just don't "weigh in". Film scholar Ray Carney is currently finishing a book on the early work of Mike Leigh. This will be very interesting, in my opinion. Be sure to check it out.
