02/28/97: You may have misunderstood me.....

Posted By: Greg M.

Hello Stefani! First of all, I'd like to say that I did not mean to patriotically defend American opinions or stereotypes, nor did I intend in any way to suggest that I felt you were too harsh on us. I personally have zero stereotypes on Europeans and if it appeared otherwise then I do apologize. I re-read my message and I could understand that it could have been interpreted as sarcastic or angry, but I assure you that this was not the case. As for your studies in England, I could infer by your previous message and your cinematic insight that you spoke rather fluent English, and I did not mean to suggest that you were "the pot calling the kettle black (since we're on phrases)." I have the upmost respect for you for refraining from seeing "Romeo and Juliet," and, if anything, it exemplifies the stereotypes (perhaps justified) about American culture. It is indeed disheartening when movies like that become so successful, yet the very fact that a movie like "Lone Star" can be made is promising. I too was in England for a few weeks when I was younger. I'm not suggesting that this gives me any knowledge of the lingo, but at least I can say I've been there :). I'm going back to Europe this summer for about a month. I should see all the major countries and cities, although I'm not convinced that that is the TRUE Europe. I'd really like to go to Ireland, since that is where my family is from, but it is slightly isolated. I should "swing by" Germany, hopefully breaking a few American stereotypes along the way. I stress that I have no German stereotypes (the most beautiful girl I've ever met was from Germany, but that's another story), but I can understand how you note American ignorance that leads to generalization.

Look after yourself
