I happened to catch the movie Less Than Zero last week on TV and had the rare experience of actually enjoying a movie I disliked the first time around (circa 1987?). <0 was based on Ellis' first novel (he also wrote American Psycho) and is the story of three recent high school grads, two of whom are being destroyed by drugs. The use of sometimes bizarre lighting and sound track music which seemed annoying in the theater seemed almost sublime on TV. The whole Downey as Christ figure deal (the movie takes place during Christmas bread) seems almost prophetic.
Downey faking his way thru rehab. Downey on drugs in a Palm Springs hotel. Downey promising that he really REALLY will clean up this time. Its only a matter of time till he winds up dead just like in the end of the movie (spoiler - so sue me the movie is 17 years old.) Life imitating art.
Although I caught the Christ figure idea the first time, on seeing it again it suddenly hit me that the James Spader character is the devil. Really. How many times does he tell people "Do you know WHO I am..." "You don't know WHO you're messing with". And Jamie Gertz as a sort of fashion model Mary the Magdalene. Started to creep me out after a while.
Some movies really do get better with age...
