Mr. Cranky, you may have the right to totally rip on every movie you see and even get down to complaining about the actors and the subjects they portray, but I feel you've gone too far with your complaints about "Selena."
I agree that the movie is sometimes jumbled and doesn't flow well, but I do feel that Jennifer Lopez did a wonderful job showing the reality of a singer many people admired and were accessible to. If you'd do a little research before blowing your horn, you'd know that there was more to the person that was the subject in this movie than just "whining", and I'm sure many others would tell you the same. The person had to at least look like the real Selena a little more than some of the hopefuls that came to the auditions. Take a look at the casting calls and you might agree. She had to have talent and Lopez has that. She needs the right roles and Selena was perfect. She had to learn to act, speak, and dance the way Selena did, which is no easy feat. She acts so much like the real Selena sometimes I'm surprised. Not anyone who shows up can do something like that.
Because of this, there wasn't enough time to really get to the heart of the story of this woman. Two hours isn't enough time to tell about one person's life, even as short as Selena's was. There is no way you can "glamorize" someone's life story. I'm surprised that you, who is against the whole Hollywood scene, would want more glamorizing to a movie that can't tell anything but the straight facts. It's a biography for crying out loud -- what do you want them to do, put in some action scenes and swearing? It would be a typical Hollywood stunt after all -- and it wouldn't be the truth, which is what people want after all.
It's about time a film maker went ahead and did a positive movie about Hispanics. And maybe more movie makers should think about making movies that will give more people hope instead of fear or crazy ideas that show up in the headlines every day. Do yourself a favor and kick yourself in the behind.
