I think I've figured out Cranky's master plan with these contests. Cranky isn't the original Cranky (The real Cranky has been retired 15 years and living like a king in Patagonia), and he's using them to find the poster most worthy of becoming the next Mr. Cranky.
It's the only logical answer!
