A state-run media need not be a throwback to the days of the USSR's Pravda, especially when it operates in the same market as privately run media organisations.
Here and in the UK, state-run media outlets protect their independence from government fiercely, and usually do a better job at covering serious news than the commercial networks. This is simply because, as they are not beholden to ratings, they can dedicate more time to serious reporting and less to unabashed ratings fodder such as 'Survivor' etc. A huge number of serious political and private-sector scandals here were broken by the ABC, with the commercial media taking up the cause after the fact.
