Why is is that Americans misuse the word liberal so badly ?
An 'economic liberal' actually means someone who believes that the state should stay out of the businesses and private affairs of its citizens. That it should not own the industries or help out the poor and needy.
Americans seem to use it to describe Social Democrats ? People who believe in an internventionist role for the state in our lives.
Why is this - to be liberal by definition means to be free of outside interfeerance surely ?
Oh well....
And why do the aussies use that revolting american spelling Labor instead of the much more elegant European eqivilant Labour ?
