Okay, let's see if I can properly explain MY theory... What I see is that the way John Doe has it planned out, each sinner dies for their sin in a unique and particularly uncomfortable way. Not one of them had it easy. My prob was that John Doe wasn't a killer of the innocent...that didn't fit his character...and Tracy was innocent. However, in order for John Doe's plan to succeed the way I think it was supposed to, she HAD to die. Here is why: Let's list off the deaths... 1) Gluttony - man forced to eat until he dies from overingestion 2) Greed - man killed when forced to remove a pound of flesh 3) Sloth - man forced to remain in a "lazy" or "slothful" manner until he emaciated and dies from it 4) Lust - woman killed by a large and bladed "tool of lust", shall we say 5) Pride - beautiful woman disfigured and given the choice between a life of pity or painless death 6) Envy - man killed by the obstacle between him and his dream...to have someone else's wife, child, job, life...his covetousness killed him

Do we see a pattern? All of these people are destroyed in some way relating to a work of fiction that in turn relates to their particular sin. The lawyer died a Shakespearean death, as told in the Merchant of Venice, the prostitute died a death foretold in the Marquis de Sade...and dear old Brad? Let's take a VERY CLOSE LOOK...and I'll admit that this didn't jump out at me...I mulled it over for more than a year...

7) Wrath - Brad Pitt's character died as surely as the others. He lived and brathed long enuf to understand the death of his wife, and MORE IMPORTANTLY TO THE CONCEPT OF BRAD'S DEATH, the destruction at his only chance at progeny. He WILL be sentanced to life for killing a restrained and unarmed man WITH INTENT. He has no family, no brothers or sisters, and no child to carry on his name. He will suffer the rest of his life in a jailcell - a very artful metaphor for Biblical Purgatory - knowing that by killing John Doe, he destroyed any FUTURE possibility that he would procreate and his children would carry on his name. He will die unknown, with no children, and will pass into dust as nothing. That was his death, as far as I can figure. Maybe it's a little to artsy for u folks, but it's the only way I can fathom to see it. Thanks for listening to me babble.
