02/01/01: I suspect the Oscar BP nominations will exactly mirror the BAFTAS

Posted By: Presley

For those who don't know, BAFTA = British Academy of Film and Television Arts -- basically the equivalent of our Oscars (with the Emmys thrown in).

BP nominees:

Almost Famous
Billy Elliot
Erin Brockovich
Gladiator
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

>>>Something tells me the British are slightly less impressed with "Traffic" than we Americans -- perhaps because "Traffic" was an adaptation of one of their series. BTW, if I had to choose only five that were going to get nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, those would be the five, though I realize "Traffic" is an EXTREMELY close sixth.

Best British Film:

Billy Elliot
Chicken Run
House of Mirth
Last Resort
Sexy Beast

Leading Actors (also likely to be the same as America's, with Benicio Del Toro's placement being the wild card)

Jamie Bell (BE)
Russell Crowe (Glad)
Michael Douglas (WB)
Tom Hanks (Castaway)
Geoffrey Rush (Quills)

Leading Actress

Juliette Binoche (Chocolat)
Kate Hudson (AF)
Julia Roberts (EB)
Michelle Yeoh (CTHD)
Hilary Swank (Boys Don't Cry)

>>>Obviously Hilary was not eligible last year for the BAFTA -- I wonder how much steam has gone out of her nomination because of that? Also note that Kate Hudson is more often than not considered "supporting" as is Yeoh -- and WHAT THE HELL IS Binoche DOING WITH ALL THESE GODDAMN NOMINATIONS?

Supporting Actor

Benicio Del Toro (Traffic)
Albert Finney (EB)
Gary Lewis (BE)
Joaquin Phoenix (Glad)
Oliver Reed (Glad)

>>>Note the lack of the Contender guys -- other than that, this is about what you would expect

Supporting Actress

Judi Dench (Chocolat)
Frances McDormand (AF)
Lena Olin (Chocolat)
Julie Walters (Billy Elliot)
Zhang Ziyi (CTHD)

>>>STOP WITH ALL THE GODDAMN CHOCOLAT PEOPLE FOR GOD'S SAKE. And once again, Yeoh and Ziyi should be swapped but probably won't be by the American Academy, who I'm sure will ignore Yeoh anyway.

Directing nominees are the same as BP except Soderbergh gets a second nomination for "Traffic" instead of Crowe.

Interestingly, though the Coen Brothers claim their screenplay is adapted from "The Odyssey," the BAFTA nominated "O Brother" for original screenplay. ;)

Gladiator and Crouching Tiger each got 14 nominations; Billy Elliot got 11.
