02/01/01: Why WAS Einstein "Man of the Century", anyway?

Posted By: Hairhead

A few reasons.

The Theory of Relativity, which led to the development of both atomic power and the atom bomb, was merely the peak of fifteen or so years of continuous, staggering scientific brilliance. When it first came out, his Theory of Relativity was so controversial in its implications that the Nobel Prize he was awarded was given for his earlier work on light.

The Theory of Relativity isn't some dead-and-gone thing. It is an enormous work whose implications and predictions are *still being tested and proven* nearly 100 years after Einstein first wrote them down.

THAT'S impressive.

Einstein was also revered for his personal eloquence and for the attention he brought to science for nearly 40 years. Einstein was the example and the inspiration for 3 or more generations of scientists and engineers throughout the world, working in all languages and cultures.

There.
