And grundle--I think people revile hitler a bit more because he wanted to wipe an entire group of people out of existence..permanently. It would be like saying--hey, you've got green eyes, step into the gas chamber. There wouldn't be anything that you could do about it--because you had been born into a certain situation, you were fucked from the start. Many jewish people did leave germany before the war started, but an even greater number of people were trapped in that situation with no means of escape.
Whereas with stalin and mao (and I'm not trying to defend them by any means here) it was less of a "I am stalin and I hate you and I am going to kill you because of what you are" but more of a "I am stalin and I am going to kill you because you are a threat to me" thing, and if you were smart, maybe, you would be able to survive (maybe). Not that survival in stalinist USSR or Cultural Revolution China would be a wonderful thing, but that's something else entirely.
