The first 3 movies were serious in tone, the fourth gets cute and manages to recycle the alien probe that threatens Earth bit from STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE. Instead of trying to get away from the sillier elements of the 60's show, the film embraces them...and the chance to turn public opinion around goes right out the photon torpedo tube.
So naturally, the Shatman, in his idiocy goes ahead and makes The Final Frontier with it even hokier plot and geriatric male bonding moments. And (almost) everyone hated it.
Only its poor reception gets the series back on track for #6, which actually does something.
Then they fuck it up with the next 4 movies, either trying to be accessible and meaningful as The Voyage Home or copying The Wrath of Khan.
But I'm not a Star Trek fan...
