Perhpas looking at the prcentage of GNP that's spent on halth care is a beter gauge. The U.S. spends about 15% or 16% of GNP on health care, and about half of that is from tax dollars. The other rich countries spend abot 10% of GNP on health care, with almost all of it being tax dollars.

I think it would be a good idea for liberals to make a list of the 10 most liberal U.S. states, and have each of those states adopt its own program of universal health care. Then we could see what works and what doesn't work. I am very curious to see what would happen.

But I really, really don't trust the U.S. federal government to do it properly. Look at how they handled Hurricane Katrina, poverty, education, illegal drugs, etc. The federal governent messes up almost everything that it touches.
