I emailed Cranky a couple months back asking him to review Tideland. I don't think it was released to the theatres in the states, only Europe.
I think the idea behind Tideland is that you play the hand your dealt. Some people are dealt some pretty fucked up hands in life, and that leads to a pretty fucked up movie.
It made sense to me.. especially if you hold it in context that the film's director is entirely mad.
