08/23/1998: King adaptations

As one who's seen almost all of them and who has read almost every book that has been made into a film, I must say that the novels of Stephen King don't translate well in to film. His books almost always deal with horror on the psychological level as well as the inner thought processes of the characters (re: The Shining), and it's almost impossible to show that on the big screen.

The only exception to this was the television miniseries of The Stand. I read the book just after watching it, and I thought that the miniseries followed the book very closely and that the characters were transferred from the reader's imagination to film extremely well. Even the compilation of characters (Rita and Norma) for the sake of time was accomplished in a believable way. This was the one case where the movie was comparable to the book.

ps: we'll have to see what Hollywood does with his novella "Apt Pupil". I saw the trailers for it this weekend, and it looks promising.
