Really, I think "disaster" is too strong a word. Even if the movie is terriblehorrible, at least the books will still be whole. Perhaps the worst that could happen would be for it to be a GOOD movie, and have it not be true to Tolkien's world... However, director Peter Jackson seems to be taking every precaution necessary to avoid this. And anyway, the film will only be his interpretation.
