03/16/01: Spice World: My review

You don't have to be a Spice Girls fan to enjoy Spice World. But it helps.

Okay, so we have five singers, not actresses. They can sing, but they can't act. We got a plausible script and a half plausible director. Throw in a few cameos by some of Britain's lackluster talent like Roger Moore and Elton John and we got Spice World.

We see the Spice Girls as they prepare for their first live tv performance. We are introduced at the opening credits to Scary, Sporty, Baby, Posh, and Ginger. There's also their manager (Richard E. Grant), whose trying to make the Spice Girls work hard for their performances; while at the same time, trying not to push them too hard. All the while, they drive around in their bus that as Roger Ebert notes, was much too bigger inside than it was outside.

We basically see a few misadventures that the Spice Girls get into. They run into some aliens who want concert tickets. They have a dance trainer who treats the entire thing like boot camp. They spend a night in a haunted house. They take care of a friend who is pregnant.

There's other things too. A director is trying to film a Spice Girls documentary. A producer is trying for ideas for a Spice Girls movie. A magazine editor wants a sneaky photographer to nab some pictures that will make the Spice Girls look bad.

Meanwhile, we see the Spice Girls visit fans and go to parties. Ironically, much about this movie is togetherness and friendship. But it was released in America just before Ginger's departure from the Spice Girls.

If you like the Spice Girls, I highly recommend this movie. If you hate the Spice Girls, avoid it with a passion. If you don't know anything about the Spice Girls, you might find a funny and pleasing film filled with song and the importance of having a good time.

p.c.
