09/13/1999: Not as good as the first one

Posted By: Irma

If you put your brain away, the first Austin Powers film was an enjoyable enough fish-out-of water romp. There was the toilet humor, the stragically-placed-object gags, the James Bond homages and, best of all, the coming to grips with the 1990's jokes.

So what do they do for a sequel? They take away what made the first Austin Powers film funny and send him back to 1969 to reclaim his mojo (his sex drive basically). Here, he encounters a deeply unfunny character called Fat Bastard who is so downright revolting words escape me. Worse still, they simply recycled old gags from the first film and hoped that we would laugh at them again. Wrong. The film is also stuffed full of in-jokes only those who saw the first one will get which is a bit unfair. The only new character who really works is Mini-me -let's hope we see more of him in better caliber projects than this.
