it's just that the music is much broader than it was in the 80's and even the 90's. you have synth pop, acid jazz, trip hop, and a fusion of death metal thrown in there. to truly classify yourself as "goth" music includes a lot of D minor rifts. that gives you that ominous lonely sound in the music itself.
just because something is dark doesn't make it goth but just because something is classified as "pop" doesn't mean it's not. it's just one wing in a mansion of many rooms. don't forget that music is purest form of self expression no matter what your interests. some people don't consider hank williams jr. real "country" music. he's more pop country or what i consider 'young' country. it doesn't mean he doesn't make country music.
johnny cash isn't country. he's rockabilly. he even said so himself.
i consider marilyn manson and NIN as well as sisters of mercy something called goth rock. the cure is something called new wave. think of goth music as an octopus and all of the different types of music as an extension of its many arms. goth rock, synth pop, new wave, dark wave, etc...
now, NIN is in a class by itself because they are more industrial. there are other bands like nitzer ebb and ramstien who are more industrial rather than goth. industrial is not goth nor is it a cross over but the people who perform it CAN consider themselves goths. in long beach, CA as well as here in phoenix there is a rivalry between the hard core industrial death punks and the goths. the death punks think the goths are too mopey and the goths think the death punks are a bunch of assholes. both are correct yet both attend each other's clubs and hang out together. now, you will hear bands such as NIN and ramstein in the goth clubs but you won't hear something like the cure in an industrial club.
