Turning the Page on Foley
Newsweek
Starting Point
In September 2006, Florida Rep. Mark Foley, who as head of
the Caucus on Exploited and Missing Children called
pedophiles "America's most depraved," is caught sending
explicit e-mails and instant messages to teen male
congressional pages.
Fever Pitch
Foley, a Republican, resigned abruptly that month and
disappeared into alcohol rehab. Out of sight but hardly
out of mind, he was dubbed the "October Surprise" of the
2006 midterm elections. Five weeks later, Democrats won
Congress for the first time in 12 years.
Present Day
Now openly gay, Foley lives in the Palm Beach mansion
owned by his longtime boyfriend, Layne Nisenbaum, a
dermatologist. His former publicist, Carey O'Donnell,
tells NEWSWEEK that Foley is plotting his next career
move, probably in real estate. He can't do much, however,
until he's cleared of legal liability in Florida, where a
local law official says the investigation into his e-mails
is "coming to a close, maybe even by Christmas."
