05/13/01: The truly odd thing about the "American Psycho" sequel

Posted By: Aron

How often has a financial failure been given a sequel? Sure, critical failures are given sequels all the time -- because they usually turned a profit anyway! Seems like "AP's" production budget, promotional and distribution costs ran almost $20M and the film barely made that much worldwide (US = $15M). I'm very surprised this thing got a green light for that reason alone. On the other hand, the new one appears to be your typical teen slasher flick, and those are so cheaply made that they ALWAYS turn a profit... of course, as soon as I say that, I see that "Forsaken" actually may not. It's only made $7M so far...

On the subject of sequels, I saw the trailers for "American Pie 2" and "Scary Movie 2" (teaser) this weekend. "AP2" had a funny ending and nothing else much worth talking about -- maybe that's a good sign that they haven't given anything away with the trailers yet. All of the original characters are back, for those wondering -- even the flute girl! Shannon Elizabeth's three second shot is in a bikini -- if that's as far as she goes in this one, I guarantee this movie will flop.

It's rather obvious that they're still filming "Scary Movie 2" because that trailer was pretty damn... well, it was basically nothing. Just a "parody" of the "Your WIFE" scene in "What Lies Beneath" (which indicates they are indeed concentrating on ghost movies this time around instead of slasher movies). And, yeah, most of the original cast members are back... obviously playing completely new characters.
