05/17/01: One of the amusing things about BTiLC...

Is that, intentionally or not, they seem to have overdone their stereotypes and cliches to the point of parody - and perhaps on purpose. That is, when they're not just outright making fun of them entirely. The whole movie is filled with broken and exaggerated stereotypes.

For instance - The NEON BUDDHA in Lo-Pan's wedding shrine. I mean, what would we say if we saw a NEON CRUCIFIX? Some would be offended, the rest of us would just laugh at the obvious misunderstanding of symbolism.

From the beginning scene where the skeptical white lawyer is forced to acknowledge the reality of chinese black magic, to the very last scene where Jack doesn't even get to kiss the girl goodbye, this movie is filled with broken cliches.

I dunno. It could be camp, or it could just be that it was the 80's and people actually believed that stuff. Or maybe John Carpenter was doing it on purpose. Anyway, a great movie.

Oh yeah, one last tidbit. It's rumored that BTiLC started out as the sequel to Buckaroo Banzai.(!)
