You distinctly said “horse apples” down in the basement. And here I’d had all sorts of epistemological ruminations on why so many words that have nothing to do with horses — do. Horseradish, horse-chestnut, horse sense, horse latitudes, horsanna in excelsis deo...
Anyway, you explained it nicely — in the old Beany & Cecil cartoon, though, the expression was “How do you like them apples — you worm?”
