I agree with your general point...
But from what I vageuely remember about the "Genesis" episode... when Picard regains consciousness on the bridge and finds it deserted... there is actually a dead human star fleet officer sitting at navigation/ops who looks like someone took a big chunk out of his throat!
(Then Picard goes into his office, from the bridge, and finds a highly aggressive mutated Riker...)
So I guess there were some casualties!
