06/29/1999: Something you might be interested in about "Greystoke"'s screenplay...

Posted By: Captain_Smith

You might be interested in knowing that Robert Towne ("Chinatown") wrote the original screenplay and wanted to direct the film. Unfortunately he had to sell his rights to the script to get the money to film "Personal Best", which was his directorial debut. Warner Brothers brought Hugh Hudson, who directed "Chariots of Fire", to helm "Greystoke" and Hughes brought another writer, Michael Austin, to fine-tune Towne's script. Towne took his name off the screenplay and replaced it with the name of his dog, "V.H. Vazak." The screenplay got an Oscar nomination, but didn't win. Too bad. I would have loved to see the acceptance speech! :)
