06/26/1999: "The Little Mermaid" hardly needs defending...

particularly from the likes of you. I've disagreed with Beast about several movies, and I don't think I'm on his enemies list. (You on the other hand...)

Just one thing--you mentioned that you believed that Disney took some other character and painted her brown to create Pocahontas. Do you really believe Glen Keane is that uninspired? For that matter can you actually CITE another Disney character that resembles Pocahontas? (Don't say Jessica Rabbit. Poca is big, but she's realistically proportioned. Jessica is deliberately exaggerated.) I also don't like criticizing an animated character solely because of his/her appearance unless it is inappropriate for the character. (Like the Echantress' appearance in "B&B:The Enchanted Christmas") It was important to both plots that Ariel and Pocahontas be beautiful, and Keane did an outstanding job creating them. If you think Ariel is little too thin, keep in mind she's very young--she only just turned 16. I think she will look quite different as her body matures. As far as Poca goes, if I had kids I'd WANT my daughter to emulate that character. Not only is Poca physically fit, but she decides (like Bogie) that there are some things in life more important than one's personal happiness. Unfortunately, she isn't very interesting, and that is my chief complaint (pardon the pun) with Pocahontas' character.
