06/26/1999: Leader is absolutely right, by the way.

Before B&B, Disney made animated films because they thought they had an obligation to their tradition to do so. "The Little Mermaid" made money, but I'm not sure that film changed Disney's attitude. B&B certainly did. After that film, Disney felt they couldn't afford NOT to make animated features, and soon every other studio in Hollywood felt the same way. I don't know if the Academy will ever give a Best Picture Oscar to an animated feature, but I think the time is soon coming when they will give an Oscar to the Best Animated Feature, since enough of them are getting made for there to be real competition. And as the quality of "Anastasia", "The Prince Of Egypt", "Antz", and "Beavis and Butt-Head Do America" show, the winner isn't necessarily going to be Disney.
