Actually, Paul Schraeder wrote it when he was on rehab after years of binging on drugs and alcohol. He was at the lowest end of the human psyche and that is exactly what the film is about. Every one at one point comes to the point in their life where lonliness and depression is consuming them, that is what the appeal of the film is for most people(Including myself) and why so many respectable, name critics consider it a classic.
