i think this film said a lot about the stereotypes related to heroes and to villains. travis would be considered a villain to most people because of his actions at the end of the movie, but really he is simply carrying out what he believes in. he wants to make someone's life better, and so he does what he sees as the best thing to do. truly heroic
He may be "simply carrying out" what he believes in, but I don't know if that makes him a hero. Travis is obviously mentaly unstable, and the way that the media made him into a hero was true irony. How long until he goes on another killing spree, thinking he is "freeing" someone? By the looks of Iris's scene with Sport, I'm not so sure she wanted to be freed.
