Remember that Iris was 12 (or, at least young enough to pass as 12), alone in a big city. She had run away from home for who knows what sort of reason.
In reality, most kids who run away from home and end up as prostitutes are either escaping sexual abuse or have a drug habit. Or both.
Perhaps the most common "trick" used by pimps to recruit new girls is to act at being a combination father-figure/boyfriend to them. Sport's comments about being lost without her, his affection to her, combined with the constant undercurrent of potential violence from him (he was much older and bigger than Iris) makes a powerful force.
A vulnerable young girl would have no chance of seeing this for what it really is: a cynical way of manipulating a woman into prostituting herself. Hell, many adults would find it difficult to say no to someone like Sport who can use the carrot and the stick so expertly.
