05/16/05: this movie was NOT politically balanced

Posted by: pile

contrary to mr cranky's observations, I contend this movie is anything but centrist in its portrayal of left and right wing ideologues. For example:

* almost every one of the liberals in the movie dies a horrible death, one by one in an ever-increasing display of painful and graphic violence

* the main characters take on the role of conservatives and in the end, save the world, any negativity associated with their characters seems forgiven, however, almost all the liberals are still dead

* the leftist presence is characterized merely as a bunch of whining pussies that *occasionally* have value, but the movie otherwise portrarys them in a far more negative light

* the movie makes Kim Jon-il out to be a misguided "sensitive" liberal-like character; the movie also makes Michael Moore out to be a suicide bomber. Both MAJOR, GROSS generalizations that have absolutely no basis in reality...

* while the liberal stereotypes are inaccurate, the conservative stereotypes are actually more truthful in their representation (sexual deviation, blatant disregard for rules & principals, violence as an appropriate solution) and in the end all the vices of the right wingers are essentially dismissed as playfulness.

The movie is decidedly right wing.

The only reason why some consider it non-partisian, is because the concept of moderate has been pushed so far to the right, that even acknowledging that any conservatives have fault in any way, is considered potentially liberal, and that somehow makes things balanced. Bullshit. About as "fair and balanced" as Fox news.

The movie forgives conservatives' faux pas, and continues to propagate the right-wing myths that: 1. Hollywood has no right having political opinions (hello? ever hear of Ronald Reagan or Ahrnold??) 2. Liberals are pacifists (except Michael Moore who apparently wants to destroy everything that's good about the country) 3. The Liberal agenda is communist/socialist 4. Liberals are stupid and lack common sense

Parker and Stone are self-professed conservatives in spirit; they do despise the whole "hippie ideal" - they've said it in interviews. They attract a very large conservative demographic, and their tendency of making fun of people who are passionate about their beliefs via Southpark as well as Team America usually ends up being much less understanding of leftist ideas.

The movie is right wing propaganda. I'm not saying that was their intent. But the process of making fun of people who are farsighted and introspective and willing to learn from their mistakes ends up giving a much more significant beating to liberals.
