my theory that although most people ARE inherently selfish, we still haven't made any real moves toward that kind of society. Plus, in theory you can be as selfish and self centered and "objective" as you want, but eventually you're going to need help from someone, and you'd better hope that you've done something to make that person want to help you.
Because although people as a whole are selfish, we are also amazingly giving and compassionate and forgiving, and our very nature conflicts within us too much to make objectivism a viable way of life.
