I just saw this film on video last night and I loved it. The photography was beautiful and I would have a tough time choosing the "best actress" from this group. While not a perfect movie, I was impressed by how well the film expressed the naivete of people about guys like Hitler and Mussolini...Maggie Smith's character was really just a composite of what so many believed during that time. The grandson disguised as a woman also reflected the ambivilance man must feel over the whole issue of going off to fight in war...and while I don't feel Italians were portrayed badly, they simply showed how when a dictator plays on people's need for self-importance, he can get anyone to do what he wants them to. There is a definite lesson here....and I enjoyed the way the makers of the film got it across.
