10/08/1998: Does Anyone Understand the Evolution of Movie Genres Anymore?

1. The reason that this movie seems so slow, boring, and predictable nowadays, is because it was made in freaking 1974! Movies like this paved the way for cliches that we take for granted in silly horror movies like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. It's not new, so don't expect anything new from it! Like the wacky cop duo movie, or the gangster family movie, or the screwball comedy, the horror genre has its own regulars and cliches, and movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre paved the way to make them commonplace. When I watch horror movies now, I think they suck unless they have a little self-aware camp in them. Older movies like this one took themselves so seriously, it might come across as silly nowadays, and inadvertantly campy due to a case of over-sincerity like Ed Wood.

It's like saying Thomas Jefferson was a bad man because he owned slaves. It was a different time, and a different set of rules. Well, maybe he WAS a prick. I mean, he wrote the Declaration of Independence on hemp instead of smoking it!
