I can't believe what has been written here. Bette Midler is the one of the best actresses I have ever seen grace the silver screen. I personally thought that this was one of her best roles. I love the part where her character (Lily) and Dennis Farina's character (Dan) were fighting at the wedding reception. I don't know why someone would wish her dead--not even as a joke. I think she has a beautiful singing voice so the whole "ripping out her voice box" thing strikes me as very petty and immature.
